Lifestyle Medicine

The leading cause of death and disability in the United States is chronic disease, yet we know that nearly 85% of chronic diseases today are caused by unhealthy lifestyle decisions in regard to sufficient physical activity and quality nutrition. Amazingly, the prevalence of chronic disease is so frequent that greater than half of the entire country are afflicted with at least one, and often more than one, chronic disease, which increases the burden of disease in healthcare costs to approximately 90% of all healthcare spending. Even the World Health Organization notes that improving nutrition and lifestyle decisions would prevent nearly 40% of cancers, and almost 80% of type-2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke around the world. The importance of lifestyle modification in Preventative Medicine cannot be understated. It is a vitally important component of health and paramount to leading a truly optimal, healthier, longer life.

Lifestyle Medicine can be thought of as a subset of Preventative Medicine. Just as Preventative Medicine seeks to optimize hormones and health, Lifestyle Medicine seeks to optimize lifestyle decisions, behaviors, and health. Addressing hormones deficiencies arguably represents only 50% of improving health and achieving a higher quality of life. At Tier 1, we recognize and understand this problem, and devised a motto to represent it “Hormones don’t stop working, people do.” Optimizing hormones represent a toolkit that can be used effectively or wasted, and from our experience, optimal hormones are only one half of the equation. The other half of the equation to improve and maintain health involves physical activity, healthy nutrition, stress reduction, quality sleep, avoidance of substances of risk, making and maintaining close relationships, and understanding personal genetic risk.

Tier 1 provides Lifestyle Medicine consultations that are comprehensive in scope and focused primarily on genetic risk education and research, but also performing adequate physical activity, adhering to healthy nutrition, and modifying all the other lifestyle categories.

Take responsibility for your health and reach a new level of optimized living. Call us today and make optimal health a reality.
